Hello again
I’m pleased to share a selection of audio and video from recent photography events in Cardiff. More to come!
Enjoy.

THE VALLEYS: PANEL DISCUSSION
Along with a good sized audience, I attended the recent ‘The Valleys and Photography’ panel discussion in Museum Cardiff on Thursday 28 November.
I took along a small camera and you can view the video below or over on YouTube.
(Apologies in advance for a couple of wobbly bits - I was holding the small camera in my lap throughout the talk. And my thanks to Paul Cabuts who kindly allowed me to pin a small microphone on him just before he took his seat - hence the better audio levels from his end of the table).
I believe the Museum also recorded the event and hopefully they’ll share their version somewhere online soon.
THE VALLEYS exhibition is running now in Museum Cardiff until 5 January 2025.
THE VALLEYS - REFLECTIONS
As his work received an early mention in the above video and panel discussion on THE VALLEYS exhibition, it seems fitting that Kjell-Åke Andersson should be next in sharing the story behind one of his featured photographs.
You can also listen to Kjell-Åke discuss his photography made during his time in Bargoed’s mining community with Martin Parr over on the Ffoton YouTube channel.
Between now and early January 2025 when THE VALLEYS exhibition ends, I’ll be posting individual stories behind the images, narrated by the photographers themselves, here on Offline Journal newsletters and then collecting them all onto a dedicated page. I’d like to thank the photographers who responded by recording their own story and supplied the corresponding image. Do try to go along and see the exhibition in Museum Cardiff as the range of photography (and art) on show is impressive.

‘SIGNATURES’ - PHOTOBOOK TALKS
The Turner House gallery and Offline Journal are looking forward to hosting the first of our new SIGNATURES talks on photobooks and photozines on Saturday 14 December.
Whilst these events are free to attend, the gallery space has a limited seating capacity and we’ve therefore decided to ticket the event. You can secure a free ticket using the button below.
These new SIGNATURES talks aim to encourage more discussion around photography in photobooks and bring photographers, and anyone interested in photography and publishing, together in relaxed afternoon events.
For this first event, artist and photographer ROBERT GREETHAM and I will discuss his RITES & TRACES book, self-published in 2021.
And DAVID HURN together with Josie Atkinson, publisher at RRB Photobooks, will discuss the background to the decades of photography featured in his brand new ON READING photobook - making its first public appearance at this event in Turner House in Penarth.
I’d encourage photographers with their own photozines to bring them along to show others at the event, and/or offer them for sale to other attendees - and maybe discuss and explore potential future collaborations!
It’s also an opportunity to browse and add your own photozine to ‘The Box of Zines’ which will be at the event - a collection of self-published zines from Wales that’s been steadily growing since it was started in late 2023 by Offline Journal and the Photography department at the University of South Wales (USW).
**I’m looking for two volunteers who might help out at the event - nothing onerous, just helping with setting up seating and refreshments. Please drop me an email at offline.journal@gmail.com if you’d be interested**.
This first SIGNATURES event is ticketed but free to attend, so please spread the word - and the ticket link below. We hope to see you at The Turner House gallery in Penarth for a great afternoon!

SANTA WORKSHOPS with Walter Waygood
Photographer Walter Waygood will be delivering both fun and educational events for young, and perhaps not-so-young, photographers over the next two Saturdays as Christmas fast approaches.
Well known for his decades-long series of portraits of Department Store Santas, Waygood will share some secrets in capturing creative Santa portraits during two Saturday workshops in the Cynon Valley Museum in Aberdare.
There’s also the opportunity to see more of the photographer’s work included in two exhibitions - THE VALLEYS and STREIC! - both currently showing in Museum Cardiff.
