TALK PHOTO - Steve Clarke
Photographer and educator Stephen Clarke is the next guest speaker tomorrow evening (5 November) in the Oriel Colwyn series of Talk Photo gatherings in Colwyn Bay.
Featured in the latest issue #013 of Offline Journal, his
Clarke’s talk on last day of his ‘Stars, Stripes and Steam’ exhibition of New York images coincides with the US Elections – with the gallery stating” “…the exhibition will close for good after the talk, leaving you in a state of limbo as to both the unresolved results of the presidential elections and the direction of US politics”.

PROXIMITY - Stephen McCoy
Longtime visitor to Wales, photographer Stephen McCoy has spent 45 years living, working, and photographing on Merseyside. “Proximity” explores his deep connection with the people and places of the region, tracing the development of his photographic practice over the decades.
Having a long association with Liverpool’s Open Eye Gallery, it’s fitting this new exhibition is hosted there featuring a selection of works from his major projects, spanning from 1979 to the present, including two recent, ongoing sets of work.
I have always felt that my best work shows a deep personal connection to the subject photographed, whether of people or place. A sense of place necessitates familiarity with an area; hence this exhibition is a distillation of a 45-year project, a continuing examination of my homeland, my Proximity.
– Stephen McCoy
There will be a celebration event in Open Eye Gallery for Proximity - A 45 year theme - Selected works by Stephen McCoy 6-8pm, Thursday 14 November 2024. Free tickets/RSVP via the button below.

‘SIGNATURES’ - PHOTOBOOK TALKS
I’m pleased to announce a NEW series of talk/social events discussing photobooks and self-publishing in photography.
A collaboration between Offline Journal and The Turner House gallery in Penarth, these new SIGNATURES talks aim to encourage more discussion around photography in photobooks and bring photographers, and anyone interested in photography, together in a relaxed event.
The first event will be held on Saturday 14 December from 12.30 - 4pm with two photographers discussing their own books.
Photographer, artist and an early Director of Ffotogallery ROBERT GREETHAM will talk about his RITES & TRACES – a self-published book and an associated 2021 exhibition based on an ongoing series of photographs, paintings and mixed-media work made since 2004 on Semana Santa, the Holy Week celebrations, in Malaga Spain.
Magnum photographer DAVID HURN will talk about his latest book ON READING, published by RRB Photobooks in early December 2024, inspired by an early book by André Kertész.
We’d also love to see photographers put this and future events in their diary as a date to aim for if experimenting with their own photobook dummy or photozine ideas. Bring them along and/or discuss potential collaborations!
It’s also an opportunity to add your own photozine to ‘The Box of Zines’ - a collection of self-published zines from Wales that’s been steadily growing since it was started in late 2023 by Offline Journal and the Photography department at the University of South Wales (USW).
This first SIGNATURES event is free to attend and more information will be shared here on the Newsletter over coming weeks. Put Saturday 14 December from 12.30 - 4pm in your diary and we hope to see you at The Turner House gallery in Penarth!
