WITNESSING WALES at The Pierhead
Photographer Mohamed Hassan will be in Cardiff Bay this Wednesday 18 October for the official opening of his Witnessing Wales exhibition now showing in Pierhead Building’s Futures Gallery.
The event starts 12 noon on Wednesday 18 September. All welcome.
The prints on show are drawn from an ongoing and expanding body of work by the young Egyptian photographer as he travels around Wales from his home in Pembrokeshire. A mix of landscapes and portraits made along various journeys as stated in the exhibition information, “…forms an allegorical tale for finding a sense of belonging within the story of Wales today”.
I’ll be going along, and it would be great to catch up with a few others for coffee afterwards if you can make it at midday Wednesday!

NEW!! THE VALLEYS - REFLECTIONS
In addition to the new catalog 004 coming in October mentioned in a previous Newsletter, one other activity I’ve been pursuing recently related to The Valleys exhibition currently showing in Museum Cardiff, has been gathering a small set of audio clips from photographers reflecting on their images included in the exhibition.
Between now and early November when the exhibition ends, I’ll be posting individual stories behind the images, narrated by the photographers themselves, here on Offline Journal newsletters and finally collecting them onto a dedicated page for future listening.
I’d like to thank the photographers who responded by recording their stories and supplying the corresponding image. Do try to go along and see The Valleys exhibition in Museum Cardiff as the range of photography on show is impressive.
As a starter, here is the first reflection by Walter Waygood - who has been making work over decades documenting his home area of Merthyr Tydfil and Blaenavon and was included in the group of photographers who contributed images for The Valleys Project in the 1980s . Enjoy.

NORTHERN EYE SPECIAL EVENT, NOVEMBER ‘24
Oriel Colwyn has announced a new event this Autumn to help fill the gap left this October through postponement of its sister EYE Festival in Aberystwyth.
‘THE INBETEWEENER’ will be a weekend of guest photography talks on the Colwyn Bay promenade with the PORTH EIRIAS building as the venue. As described in the announcement in the recent Oriel Colwyn Newsletter:
It’s not officially our year so this is ‘the inbetweener’ if you like. We have been thrilled with the response to our fortnightly TalkPhoto events so are pleased to be able to offer a full weekend of talks here in Colwyn Bay…
We have an exciting weekend of speakers and events planned for the weekend of Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th November - more details on that soon! But as the Porth Eirias building has less of a capacity than our normal Theatr Colwyn venue, tickets will be limited in number and we wanted to give you all the head’s-up to get tickets for the event.
Programme details have yet to be announced on the Oriel Colwyn website.
Tickets are available via the Theatr Colwyn online box office button below:
Both The EYE International Photography Festival (Aberystwyth) and The Northern EYE Photography Festival (Colwyn Bay) will run over different weekends in October 2025. More info and links will be posted here when available.
