Hello again
Here’s some news on very topical self-publishing, photographer conversations, exhibitions and events in and of Wales.
Brian
OUTSIDERS by David Hurn
He may have just celebrated his ninetieth Birthday last Sunday but David Hurn hasn’t lost momentum in getting his photography - new and old - out to audiences in printed form.
His most recent release is his first flirtation with self-publishing a full colour photography zine titled Taylor Swift’s OUTSIDERS with observations on the artiste’s current ERAS tour and the many thousands of ‘Swifties’ who arrived in Cardiff on 18 June for her performance that evening. Hurn spent a full six hours on his own exploring the city centre streets surrounding the Principality Stadium venue and captured the many interactions between fans gathering outside, merch stalls and bewildered shoppers - with the zine providing his own selection and sequencing of favourite images over 64 pages.
First seen in the wild at the Martin Parr Foundation on Monday evening earlier this week, a batch of zines available immediately sold out within a few hours. However, Offline Journal has ten copies from the short print run signed by David Hurn available now on a first come-first served basis using the link below at just £10 per copy + £3.00 P&P (UK only).

ROO LEWIS Ffoton Conversation
Featured in the latest issue #012 of Offline Journal, commercial photographer Roo Lewis has become better known to the wider photography community in Wales through his sensitive and long-term study of the south Wales town of Port Talbot and the resulting photobook Port Talbot UFO Investigation Club published by GOST Books in late 2023.
Over a period of two years Roo Lewis photographed the Welsh town of Port Talbot which, according to actor Michael Sheen, has an ‘extremely high number of UFO sightings’. However, the resulting book Port Talbot UFO Investigation Club is not a study of UFO sightings but instead uses the phenomena as a starting point to explore the people, landscape and folklore of the town.

Following his feature in Offline Journal, he kindly agreed to add his voice to the Ffoton Wales archive of conversations with photographers creating meaningful bodies of work in and of Wales. You can listen to Roo’s in-depth conversation on the Ffoton Wales YouTube Channel now.

Limited copies of his photobook’s print run are available (signed) direct from the photographer via his website or (unsigned) through GOST Books.
OPEN CALL for FFOTO CYMRU 24
Photographers have until midnight next Tuesday 30 July to submit work for Ffotogallery’s new FFOTO CYMRU festival and it’s theme: ‘What You See is What You Get?’ running throughout October 2024.
What You See is What You Get? is intended as a provocation, an invitation to question the literal translation of visual information. Do we really get what we see? Or is it more complicated than that? What You See Is What You Get? explores how we see, understand and use images, how they shape our identities and culture, from historical archives to AI and modern technologies.

The Open Call website page states: ‘Up to four selected artists will receive a £400 artist fee, with all print and production costs covered by Ffotogallery as part of Ffoto Cymru 2024’.
Full information on the Call requirements and how to apply before deadline closes at 23:59 BST Tuesday 30th July 2024 are available on the link below:

CAEADDA @ Ffotogaleri y Gofeb
Hot on the heels of Pete Davis’ ‘Great Little Tin Shed of Wales’, Machynlleth’s Ffotogaleri y Gofeb is now showing David Shaw’s CAEADDA: Farming in the Dyfi Valley exhibition of prints.
“CAEADDA is work that David Shaw produced to gain his MA in Photography at the London College of Communication and reflects his journalistic background. For him, farmers and the farming way of life is a story, one that needs to be told and there is often a thin dividing line between social documentary photography and photojournalism”.
