NEW – Offline Journal issue #011
Offline Journal issue #011 is the first to be very close to the wire in terms of completion and sending to printers – but entirely down to me choosing to interview Marc Wilson in person at the recent Books on Photography (BOP) photobook festival in Bristol over 7-8 October. If you haven’t attended any of the previous four BOP events, I can highly recommend going along for at least one of the two days to fill your boots with inspiration and threaten your bank account balance (next year’s BOP is scheduled for the weekend of 19-20 October 2024).
I’m pleased with the new issue – there’s a real mix of really interesting articles on photographers and publishers in and beyond Wales, and definitely an issue to read carefully if you’re considering either self-publishing or approaching a professional publisher with work for a photobook idea.
You can read the full contents listing and contributors for the new issue, as well as order a copy, via www.offline.wales
Offline Journal #011, as well as a selection of remaining back-issues, will also be available at Ffotogallery’s Photo Book Fair in Cardiff 12 - 4pm this coming Saturday 21 October. Say hello if you’re attending.
NEW 2-ISSUE SUBSCRIPTIONS AVAILABLE
With Offline Journal #011 now available, you can receive it and the next issue #012 (published April 2024) through a 2-issue Subscription – with or without special printed supplements plus a monthly Subscriber version of this Newsletter.
A subscription means you’re not just supporting Offline Journal but also securing copies from the limited print run and avoiding any price increase in the coming year.
PICTURES ON PAGES EVENT - 20/10/23

Just a reminder if you’re interested in publishing your own photo zines and/or books – for pleasure or profit – the Pictures on Pages this Friday afternoon will offer an informal and relaxed afternoon of networking, viewing a selection of creative photo zines and a guest panel discussion on photography publishing and collaboration.
If you have a photo zine of your own work - feel free to bring it along and show it off!
The event is free, and precedes Ffotogallery’s Photo Book Fair the following day – Saturday 21 October from 12-4pm at Ffotogallery in Cathays, where Offline Journal will have two tables – one for Offline publications (including the new issue #011) and another to display zines submitted for the public display table from the Pictures on Pages event.
1 - 1.30pm: event opens, zine display, chat
1.30 - 2.15pm: Panel discussion pt1

I’ll be chairing the discussion panel, and the panel members joining me on the day are:

You can read a short bio for each panel member on the event page here >
Be quick if you would like to have your photo zine shown at the two events in Cardiff over the weekend, the process is free, open to all and very simple…
Send your photo Zines (maximum of two titles) to:
David Barnes
Photography Dept.
University of South Wales
Atrium Campus, Adam Street
CARDIFF
CF24 2FN
Please mark the back of the envelope ‘PICTURES ON PAGES’.
If not printed in your Zine, ensure you include a note with your name and contact info – a website or Instagram handle – alongside the Zine. This will allow us to share your info with anyone interested in your work.
(Please note Zines submitted cannot be returned. Over time, I’m hoping we can build a collection of creative photography zines to display at more photography events and festivals across Wales - and help promote more self-published works by photographers).
The event is free, but the organisers would appreciate it if you could register here to allow us to get an idea of numbers attending. Thanks.
TIN SHEDS: REDUX catalog now available
Great Little Tin Sheds of Wales: Redux - the new 56-page catalog collaboration between photographer Pete Davis, Offline Journal and Ffotogaleri y Gofeb in Machynlleth is now available to order direct from the Offline Journal online store
I had the pleasure of working with Pete on the design of Great Little Tin Sheds of Wales: Redux – which also includes new writing by Pete and Susan Daniel-McElroy, who was Director of Ffotogallery (then Susan Beardmore) in the early 1980s and produced the original exhibition and accompanying catalogue.
The Great Little Tin Sheds of Wales exhibition is open now at Ffotogaleri y Gofeb and runs until 22 December 2023. Check their website for opening times.
You can watch Pete do a flip-through of the new catalog 002 on his YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/@pete-davis-photography
FESTE - Rhodri Jones
If you happen to be visiting Italy this side of Christmas, Rhodri Jones is currently exhibiting his FESTE series, a body of work made over thirty years documenting popular festivals events in Italy, at the QR Photogallery in Bologna. The exhibition runs 20 October until 19 November 2023.
You can see a selection of images from FESTE on Rhodri’s website:

You can also listen/watch Rhodri discuss his FESTE project on the Ffoton YouTube channel from back in 2020 here >
(Speaking of Ffoton livestreams, I also bumped into photographer Simon Bray at the BOP23 festival. Simon talked with ffoton on his collaboration with an artist friend when both were making new work in the Welsh landscape.
