THE NEWPORT BOXER
This Friday evening (22 Sept 6-8pm) will see the official opening of photographer Glenn Edwards’ exhibition of photographs documenting a year behind the scenes with Newport boxer David Pearce who claimed the British Heavyweight champion crown in the early 1980s.
The Riverfront Theatre & Arts Centre in Newport city centre are hosting the exhibition of unique prints, never before seen together, and the opening event on Friday also marks the 40th anniversary of the prize-winning fight.
To accompany the exhibition, Edwards has self-published YUCKER’S YEAR: David Pearce – Newport’s Rocky 1983, a 92-page softcover book that brings together not just the document of an important year for the boxer, but also for the photographer as the images formed the final year project for Edwards in 1983 as a student on the original Newport Documentary Photography course. Copies of the book will be available at the opening event or directly from the photographer.
The exhibition is open now and runs until 5 October.

Sneak peek: new TIN SHEDS: REDUX catalog
Pete Davis is now on YouTube and sharing short videos of photographic analogue alchemy from his studio in Ceredigion.
The latest video puts aside the chemicals to provide a preview of his Great Little Tin Sheds of Wales: Redux catalog - fresh from the printers - and ready for the opening of his exhibition of the same name in Ffotogaleri y Gofeb in Machynlleth on Friday 6 October 2023.
I had the pleasure of working with Pete on the design of Great Little Tin Sheds of Wales: Redux – which also includes new writing by Pete and Susan Daniel-McElroy, who was Director of Ffotogallery (then Susan Beardmore) in the early 1980s and produced the original exhibition and accompanying catalogue.
Copies of the new catalog 002 will be available at the exhibition opening event on Friday 6 October at Ffotogaleri y Gofeb 3.30- 5.30pm
You can watch Pete do a flip-through of the new catalog 002 on his YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/@pete-davis-photography
PICTURES ON PAGES EVENT - 20/10/23
Momentum is building for the afternoon event to be held in the University of South Wales (USW) Atrium from 1-4pm on Friday 20 October 2023, organised by the Photography department at USW and Offline Journal.
For any photographers interested in publishing their own photo zines and/or books – for pleasure or profit – Pictures on Pages will offer an informal and relaxed afternoon of networking, viewing a selection of creative photo zines and a guest panel discussion on photography publishing and collaboration. And for anyone wishing to continue networking over a relaxed drink afterwards, the Student Union will also host a fun Quiz to test your photo brain cells. I’ll be there for both afternoon and evening activities – so please say hello or grab me if there’s anything you would like to discuss.
The event is free, and precedes Ffotogallery’s Photo Book Fair the following day – Saturday 21 October from 12-5pm at Ffotogallery in Cathays, where Offline Journal will have two tables – one for Offline publications (including the new issue #011) and another to display zines submitted for the public display table from the Pictures on Pages event.
If you would like to have your photo zine shown at the two events in Cardiff over the weekend, the process is free, open to all and very simple…
Send your photo Zines (maximum of two titles) to:
David Barnes
Photography Dept.
University of South Wales
Atrium Campus, Adam Street
CARDIFF
CF24 2FN
Please mark the back of the envelope ‘PICTURES ON PAGES’.
If not printed in your Zine, ensure you include a note with your name and contact info – a website or Instagram handle – alongside the Zine. This will allow us to share your info with anyone interested in your work.
(Please note Zines submitted cannot be returned. Over time, I’m hoping we can build a collection of creative photography zines to display at more photography events and festivals across Wales - and help promote more self-published works by photographers).
