#43: Offline Journal Newsletter : 27 Oct '22
Photo Blogs, Newsletters and tons of exhibitions in Wales!
With a recent image from her latest and ongoing project ‘Where the Red Kite Flies’ featured on the cover of the latest 40-page issue of Offline Journal, Malvern-based photographer Amanda Jackson is back at her cabin in Pembrokeshire to make more work.
Having recovered a batch of undeveloped film rolls shot during the project from a processing lab that recently went out of business, Amanda has decided to continue her ‘sponsor a roll of film’ initiative to help raise funds to cover the increasing cost of film stock and processing. In addition to the photographer’s thanks, sponsors receive an exclusive print shot on their roll of film. You can read more about this and her views on sustainability in photography in the latest post on her website Blog which documents progress on her two year project.
From Blogs to Newsletters
On the subject of photographer’s Blogs, Mark Moran - whose image featured on the cover of Offline Journal’s issue #008 in April - has decided to experiment with supplementing the very interesting Blog on his own website with a new off-site Substack Newsletter which he neatly describes in the first post as ‘Algorithm-free Correspondence’.
“Sharing on social media for likes is not something I thrive on and it’s become a rash that grows red raw with every scratch. I’m not looking for another Instagram, I still use it, I’m looking for a new way to share alongside my website and blog”.
– Marc Moran
With his second post now live and featuring new work from a follow-up shoot with the same collaborator, musician Sharifa, featured on the Offline #008 cover, you can follow Mark’s updates and comment on his analogue adventures by subscribing free to his Newsletter using the button below:
There are just a couple of copies of issue #008 which features Mark’s Sharifa cover and a 4-page interview with the photographer - grab one here >

Happy Birthday to The Workers Gallery
The Workers Gallery will celebrate its 8th birthday this Sunday 30 October and you’re invited to join them celebrate!
The small gallery and its 2-person team of Gayle Rogers and Chris Williams continue to punch above their weight with help from local supporters in staging a creative annual programme of exhibitions and community events - including photography - that go beyond just the photography audience.
Located in the small village of Ynyshir in the heart of the Rhondda Valley, it was perhaps fitting for The Workers to recognise and host the first exhibition of Dan Wood’s excellent Gap in the Hedge project in September 2018 - followed by Oriel Colwyn showing the work as the featured exhibition during the second Northern EYE Festival in late 2019. You can listen to my recording of Dan in discussion with Paul Cabuts at The Workers on the Ffoton website.
I’m grateful to Gayle for writing the introduction to the latest issue #009 in which she stresses the importance of building and maintaining a community around photography and the Arts for mutual benefit.
There’s an open invite for anyone to join them in celebrating reaching eight years from 1 - 4.30pm in the Gallery on Sunday 30 October.
Go along with a camera.
Rhondda Photo Walk this Saturday
The Workers Gallery is the meeting point for a relaxed photo walk around the nearby area from 11am this Saturday 29 October.
“It's free and everyone is welcome. Bring your smartphone or camera and join us for a stroll from Ynyshir to Porth, documenting the everyday delights of the urban landscapes. Then, have a warm-up and pop into The Workers Gallery to see their latest photo exhibitions”, says organiser and local photographic artist Lucy Jane Purrington
