Hello again
There’s still a lot happening in photography in and around Wales (check out the extensive exhibitions listings at the end.).
In this Newsletter, I’m delighted to share the first part of an audio conversation I recorded with artist and educator Stephen Clarke who featured in an article in Offline Journal issue #003 back in autumn 2019. Enjoy.
Things are busy here with interviews now completed and articles being written for what promises to be a packed new issue #009 of Offline Journal coming in early October. You can secure a copy of this new issue and the next #010 by supporting Offline through a Subscription via offlinejournal.bigcartel.com
Thanks again
Brian
Alien Resident - Stephen Clarke
There can’t be many student projects requiring a journey of over 5000 miles to make a series of photographs over the span of a year.
But a young Stephen Clarke opted to do just that while studying Fine Art at Gwent College of Higher Education in Newport, South Wales in the early 1980s. The young artist was already using photography extensively in his work and was an admirer of the New Topographics aesthetic which had emerged a decade earlier in the USA, and decided (with no real plan) to head for San Diego with his 35mm camera.
A year later, he returned to the UK and developed a great many rolls of exposed film.
Listen below to the first of Offline Journal’s 2-part conversation with Stephen Clarke on his work made in San Diego.
The full version of parts 1 & 2 combined will be available tomorrow evening on the Subscriber+ area of the Offline Journal website.
Part 2 will be available here on Friday 7 October to coincide with the opening of The EYE International Photography Festival in Aberystwyth - tickets are still available for the weekend 7-9 October www.theeyefestival.com/2022-tickets
Welsh Boxing History - Glenn Edwards
Like Stephen Clarke, Glenn Edwards was also busy creating work whilst a student at Newport College of Art in Clarence Place in the 1980’s, but Glenn had opted to study on the Documentary Photography Course under David Hurn.
“Thinking back, I suppose the most intriguing aspect of all of this was the access I was given. Getting ring-side passes for fights wasn’t an issue and obviously the more I worked with David and the family the more trust they had in me. But for a student today, I believe it would be impossible to have the access to photograph such an in-depth documentation of a national sport star”.
– Glenn Edwards
YUCKER’S YEAR: David Pearce – Newport’s Rocky 1983 - 210 x 260mm softcover book with 92 pages plus cover - will be heading off to the printers in coming weeks and will be available for purchase at £20 in the next month or so.
A selection of prints of images from the book will be exhibited for the first time through October 2022 in Ffoto Newport.
