October 2021 promises a very busy – indeed unprecedented – month of photography festivals in Wales.
Issue #7 of Offline Journal is also currently in production for another packed issue following the ‘Wild Skies’ issue #6 which sold out in a matter of weeks. The new issue will be published in it’s usual October slot to coincide with a packed month of photography Festivals and photography exhibitions around Wales. New Subscriptions are now available for the next two issues of Offline (October & April) with an option to also opt for the limited edition printed supplements here: offline.wales/subscribe
Indie Galleries
In my recent Newsletters to Offline Journal Subscribers, I’ve been discussing in longer form the importance of photographers in, and visitors coming to, Wales in October for the three Photography Festivals (see listings below) perhaps also taking time to visit the several smaller photography-specific galleries we have around Wales, as all will have photography on their walls in the Autumn.
It would be fantastic if smaller indie gallery spaces showing photography during October might be considered and remembered as destinations for photography during and beyond the fast-approaching festival season.
‘Likes’ on Instagram and retweets on Twitter are no doubt appreciated by both galleries and photographers but are, sadly, quickly displaced by thousands of new distractions online. If we value the experience of visiting diverse (and real) spaces to view photography then perhaps we might, individually and collectively, shout louder about them, on and offline.
If you’re thinking of taking a trip up to Oriel Colwyn, you can listen to my February 2020 conversation with photographer Michael Bennett, where we discussed the background to his Pier Closing Time photographs in #20 of this Offline Newsletter here.
