THE PHOTOBOOK & WALES
Scheduled to head off to printers this week, issue #005 of the touchy-feely, ink-on-paper Offline Journal is the first exploration of photography books from and of Wales.
This special 32 page issue of Offline Journal dives into an eclectic mix of photobooks from the early days of photography and up to the present day by Welsh photographers and visitors making work in Wales. Readers may be familiar with a some titles but I’m confident co-editor Ellie Hopkins and I have dropped in a few surprises.

Befitting an issue of the Journal focussing on photobooks, there are four in-depth book reviews - one of which takes a close look at NOT STILL - the new and highly personal book self-published a few months ago by Valleys-based photographer, writer and researcher Paul Cabuts. We’re also delighted to feature one of Paul’s images on the cover.
Taking centre-stage in issue #005 is a unique six page ‘Timeline’ feature on photobooks from Wales spanning 1864 - 2020 – some of which will hopefully have a few readers researching further and adding to their own book shelves!
Encouragingly, despite the ongoing COVID-19 situation, photographers around Wales have been determined and productive in taking projects onto the printed page as books and zines. We have an article highlighting several new titles scheduled to be published around our publication date and just after - including Scaffold to the Moon by Huw Alden Davies and now available for pre-order.

2020 has been a challenging year for all of us - and closure of gallery spaces who stock Offline Journal hasn’t helped!
Despite the temporary closure due to COVID restrictions of six stockists who widen the reach of Offline Journal this year, I’ve pushed on with planning of issues #005 & #006 and have committed to publishing them. I think print on paper is important in recording the development of photography across Wales as it creates a tangible and easily accessible resource - offline from the noise, fluff and distraction of the web.
By subscribing to Offline Journal, you’re not only guaranteeing two future issues of the Journal with associated Offline Essays & exhibition poster supplement for your own collection, you are ensuring I can plan ahead for new Journals and their related print materials.
Whilst purchases of single issues of the Journal are much appreciated, buyers really are missing out on the great supplements - collectable in their own right!!

For example, the brand new Offline Essay #4 (above) by former Ffotogallery Director Robert Greetham tells the fascinating story behind Wales’s first iteration of a Journal on Welsh photography that produced twelve issues back in the early 1980’s. Specially written for Offline, this exclusive four page essay is included with subscriber copies of issue #005 and won’t be available for purchase by non-subscribers until January 2021.
Help support indie photography publishing in Wales by subscribing to Offline Journal for £25 (inclusive of P&P) and receive two issues of the Journal, two Offline Essays and one indie exhibition souvenir poster. Subscribe and pay securely online using the button below.
